Shimizu Corporation and its wholly-owned subsidiaries, SC Machinery Corporation and IHI Transport Machinery Co Ltd, have jointly commenced work on designing and building what is believed to be the largest and “most dynamic” movable tower crane in Japan, intended for construction of extra-large facilities.

\n\n

Called the S-Movable Towercrane, it will have a maximum working height of 152 m, maximum load capacity of 145 t, and 12.5 m radius. Shimizu said it will invest about 1.1 billion yen in this development, which is scheduled to be completed by June 2023. It is expected to give the company a competitive advantage “in securing the top spot for bids in the market forecast to be worth 5 trillion yen, and acquiring the highest contract share in onshore wind power construction projects.”

Shimizu has observed that in line with the Japanese government’s objective to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, interest in the renewable energy industry has greatly increased across the country, particularly in wind power generation, gaining numerous construction projects both offshore and onshore.

\n\n

“There has been a rising demand for construction of onshore wind power facilities using movable cranes,” said Shimizu. “Additionally, various power generating facilities that have passed their useful life when the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) system was implemented exhibited the need for equipment replacement and plant rebuilding, further fuelling the demand.”

\n\n

The company added, “Since the end of the FIT programme, larger and more efficient power-generating facilities have shown to be vital considering the falling prices of electricity and streamlining of construction.”

\n\n

The movable cranes available in the local market are currently limited to constructing mid-sized power generation facilities, about 100 m in height and generating 4 MW, explained Shimizu. Building a larger facility will require a larger crane, and for this reason, the company decided to develop the S-Movable Towercrane, which is capable of constructing extra-large onshore facilities up to 150 m in height and generating 5 MW.

\n\n

One of the highlights of the new crane would be a simple and straightforward disassembly of its mast and base, allowing it to be transported easily to the next construction site using a dolly (a self-propelled, wheeled transport vehicle).

\n\n

According to Shimizu, the development of the S-Movable Towercrane forms a key part of the company’s Investment Plan – which is under its Mid-Term Management Plan (2019-2023) – for investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and new businesses.

Masdar, a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable urban development headquartered in the UAE, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Petronas, a Malaysia-based global energy and solutions company, to explore renewable energy opportunities across Asia and beyond.

\n\n

The two partners have agreed to explore joint participation in a range of areas, with a focus on utility-scale renewable energy, including ground-mounted and floating solar projects, as well as offshore wind projects in Asia, and potentially other regions and other technologies. Apart from Malaysia, both partners are also interested in countries in the region that have pledged to accelerate the development of renewable energy, including Vietnam and Taiwan.

\n\n

“This agreement marks an important step on Masdar’s journey to expand our presence in the Asian market, where we see tremendous potential given the region’s rapid economic growth and potential renewable energy resources,” said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. “We look forward to collaborating with Petronas, a world leader in the energy sector and a company committed to sustainable development, to meet the growing demand for renewable energy solutions across the region.”

Petronas’ president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said, “Petronas’ MoU with Masdar marks another milestone in our existing partnership with Mubadala, which will now include a focus on renewables and green hydrogen. Petronas currently has over 1 GWp of solar capacity in operation and under development for commercial and industrial customers in India and Southeast Asia. In Malaysia, Petronas has embarked on solar rooftop solutions and has over 90 MWp of capacity under development for commercial and industrial customers.

\n\n

Last year, Masdar made its first investment into Southeast Asia, signing a power purchase agreement with PLN, the state electricity company in Indonesia, for the first floating solar photovoltaic plant in the country. In December, it announced the formation of a joint venture company to develop the 145-MWac project – the largest of its kind in the region.

\n\n

Also last year in Indonesia, Masdar submitted the lowest tariff for the Saguling floating solar photovoltaic 60-MWac project in the context of the Hijaunesia tender process, highlighting Masdar’s commitment to investing and growing in the region.

Taiwan offshore wind market is poised to witness multifold expansion to reduce its reliance on fossil fuel generation and build a cleaner sustainable power generation mixture, according to the data and analytics company GlobalData. The country is estimated to build around 15 GW of offshore wind capacity by end of 2035.

\n\n

The offshore wind segment in Taiwan has become more active since 2019. GlobalData forecasts that the country’s offshore wind capacity is expected to reach over 4.5 GW by 2025, thereby expanding to 10.1 GW by 2030 and reaching more than 15 GW by 2035, thus becoming the largest offshore market after China in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Somik Das, senior power analyst at GlobalData said, “Taiwan has favourable conditions for offshore wind with wind speeds of almost 10-12 m/s in the Taiwan Strait. The country drew attention of several international wind developers and investors due to its commitment to the development of offshore wind energy. Amongst them are some EU-based companies, such as EnBW Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG, WPD offshore GmbH, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and Denmark-based Orsted Ltd.”

To support clean energy, in 2016, the government announced to phase out nuclear power plants completely before 2025 and reach its target of 20% renewable energy supply by 2025. The move also helps to attain environmental sustainability and reduce the nation’s carbon footprint. With coal forming almost 48% of the generation mix, the nation was ranked third to last in the 2019 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI).

\n\n

Mr Das concluded, “Taiwan is blessed with high offshore potential, providing greater market size and stability, conducive policy environment, established Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) market, and project financing ease, which are predicted to act as the multipliers that will ensure Taiwan is presented as the most attractive offshore market in APAC region.”

Danish engineering consultancy Ramboll has been commissioned as lead designer for the construction of offshore wind farms in Guangdong province, China. The company was selected by the project developer, SPIC Guangdong Offshore Wind Power Ltd.

The first two of approximately 500 offshore wind turbine foundations have now been designed and fabricated. According to Ramboll, these monopiles are not only the largest in the world – they have a weight of 1,600 t each compared to the current record of 1,300 t – they are also installed at the greatest water depth seen for wind turbines in China so far: 37 m.

In the project, Ramboll has provided consultancy on geotechnical and met ocean investigations and has applied ROSAP to calculate how the turbines, earthquakes, waves, current and tide will impact the structures and how they will react to typhons. The area was hit by no less than 18 typhoons during the 2018 typhoon season.

The offshore wind farms will be located near the rapidly growing Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Jieyang. There are ambitious plans to install 15 to 20 GW of wind power in Guangdong, said Ramboll.

“Guangdong is the province with the highest GDP in mainland China, and it is also one of the richest and the most populous in the nation. In this province we see an increasing demand for energy as well as a demand to reduce air pollution in the cities. We can meet the demand from the population for clean energy with wind energy, which can now commercially compete with coal and other fossil fuels. So we need this wind farm now and we need it fast,” said Zhang Yi, chief engineer of SPIC Guangdong Electric Power Co Ltd.

”Ramboll completed the design of the two monopiles super-fast so that the design and fabrication took less than five months, which is two-three times faster than usual. Our comprehensive experience from the design of offshore wind farms in Europe and our in-house design programme enabled us to do it so quickly,” said Søren Juel Petersen, Ramboll’s global market director.

Ramboll has worked with offshore wind in China since 2004 and was in 2015, as the first European consultancy, commissioned with the design of one of the country’s largest offshore wind farms SPIC Binhai North H1 in the Jiangsu province, north of Shanghai. Since then Ramboll has won four other contracts in China, not least because Ramboll has designed more than 60% of all offshore wind turbine foundations in the world. Also, the company’s in-house software programme ROSAP (Ramboll Offshore Structural Analysis Package) enables the company to further optimise calculations of the steel required for the foundations, typically cutting steel costs by up to 20%.
